Jewellery Care
Why Does Jewellery Tarnish?
Tarnishing is a natural process that occurs when metals react with their surrounding environment, including air, moisture, sweat, perfumes and skincare products.
Silver can darken over time as it reacts with sulphur compounds in the air.
Brass naturally develops a darker patina as it reacts with oxygen and moisture.
Gold is highly resistant to tarnishing, particularly solid gold, but lower-carat gold can change colour over time due to the other metals in the alloy.
Tarnishing is completely normal and can usually be removed with cleaning. With proper care, your jewellery can be enjoyed for years to come.
Silver
For everyday care, I recommend using a silver polishing cloth to keep your jewellery looking bright and shiny. Each silver piece will arrive with its own polishing cloth, but Town Talk is a great brand to turn to if you ever need a replacement. If your silver jewellery develops heavier tarnish that won't come off with a polishing cloth alone, I recommend Town Talk Anti-Tarnish Silver Polish. Always follow the instructions on the bottle carefully when using the polish.
Please take care to keep polish away from gemstones and other materials, as it may damage them.
Brass
Some people love the aged, vintage look that patina gives brass, but if you prefer to keep your jewellery looking bright and new, a brass polishing cloth is ideal for removing light tarnish and patina.
For heavier tarnish, I recommend Peek Metal Polish. Apply a tiny amount to a cotton bud and gently work it onto the brass, then buff with a polishing cloth. Take care not to rub too harshly, as this can scratch the surface.
Avoid getting the polish on any gemstones or other materials, as it may damage them.
Jewellery Care Tips
Wear your jewellery regularly: Wearing your silver jewellery can help slow tarnishing, as the gentle friction from everyday wear can help keep the surface clean.
Put jewellery on last: Apply perfume, moisturiser, hairspray and makeup before putting on your jewellery. These products can react with the metal and contribute to tarnishing.
Keep it away from harsh chemicals: Remove your silver jewellery before swimming in chlorinated water, using household cleaning products or coming into contact with substances containing sulphur.
Store it with care: Keep your jewellery clean and completely dry before storing it in an airtight bag, anti-tarnish pouch or closed jewellery box. An anti-tarnish strip can also help slow tarnishing, while silica gel helps absorb moisture.
